How I Met My Mermaid Squad
I seek to inspire. Each day I want to encourage someone to try something new, to step outside of his or her comfort zone. The benefits are amazing and the risk usually minimal. It's just our fear we must overcome.
Well let me set the scene, because I surprised myself on this one.
Wife, mother, professional, living in South Georgia. Most recently, aerialist. So I decided to practice what I preach and I took the opportunity to embark on an Aerial Yoga Mermaid Retreat in Orlando. The weekend retreat was only a 3 hour drive (and only two-days) making it feasible to squeeze into my schedule. So I booked it. No expectations. Knew NO ONE personally, that would be there. But here I was packing my bags.
Flash forward to Saturday morning, entering the Aerial Yoga Goddess headquarters. I was somewhat nervous, but really excited. Because, for one, I did know I was supposed to dress like a mermaid, and I'm always down for a costume. So, I open the door and there they are, a house full of mermaids, pink, purple, aqua, blue. Let's be real. Every color of the rainbow.
Introductions began, and it wasn't long before I'd met 9 other women from across America. We were all so different... in our practice or journey of aerial, in our relationship status, in our stage of life. But after a very powerful 'goddess circle' it was clear. We all had SO much in common.
It was simple. We loved aerial yoga and its impact on our lives. Everyone also had this passion for life, and growth and it was freakin beautiful. I sat in silence trying to let it sink in... ten women, same passion, all authentic, supportive, in a circle vibing off one another. I'm not going to lie, it was breathtaking.
So that is how I met my Mermaid Squad! Margie, Lisa, Christina, Cori, Jessica, Kristen, Meredith, Ophy, and Stacy. I spent the next two days with them, getting to know each individually. They were all so beautiful, and wonderful with amazing gifts of their own. I cherish the way each opened my heart or awakened my spirit. I can't go into detail, because I'd have to write a novel. But I mainly want to thank them for being their authentic selves. And also pat myself on the back for doing it, for saying, "yes!" For taking a chance, that has ultimately given me a life long circle of supportive, knowledgeable, strong women who've got my back, and I've got theirs. There is something powerful about that.
Then you know I have to leave you with a quote or something....
“Be fearless. Have the courage to take risks. Go where there are no guarantees. Get out of your comfort zone even if it means being uncomfortable. The road less traveled is sometimes fraught with barricades bumps and uncharted terrain. But it is on that road where your character is truly tested and you have the courage to accept that you’re not perfect, nothing is and no one is — and that’s OK.”
